First Review of New Film Conversion Service

I just recently started converting film to digital (DVDs and/or computer files). I really should have mentioned it here but I’m still not used to this blog thing–I need to update it more often.Anyway, I just received my first review from a customer. It reinforces my claim about the quality of service I provide and also confirms the need for this service, so I thought I would share it here unedited.

Dear Robert,

I am very pleased with the digital transfer that you did for me of my parents’ old 8mm film reels.

I had bought some equiptment a while back to try to transfer it myself, but I wasn’t satisfied with my result. My effort yeilded an uneven and often blurry or overexposed image.

Not so with your transfer. You must have gone to maticulous lengths or have much better equiptment than I did. My parents’ footage was steady, clear, and crisp.

I also had a VHS copy of some other 8mm footage that someone had transferred back in the 80s.

I gave the original source 8mm reels to you and you created a much better transferred image than that other guy years before.

My parents recently had a house fire that consumed everything except for what they carried out. It was especially difficult for my mom to adjust losing everything.

They initially thought that their old 8mm footage was left in their attic and thus, lost forever. However I had it safely at my house.

They haven’t seen this 1969 honeymoon-vacation footage of themselves in decades.

I am going to give them the DVD copies of everything that you carefully prepared as an anniversary gift this coming Feburary. I’m excited to see them relive those moments.

What a Festival

We just spent the weekend manning our booth at the Katy Rice Harvest Festival.

Shared a booth with friend. We didn’t get a lot of sales. I guess people just aren’t buying due to the economy. However, we got a lot of interest in our video conversion services. We also made several contacts that could lead to some good business opportunities. All in all, it turned out to be a pretty good weekend!

After weeks of work, I have finally completed the update to my web site. I have added new features like some unobtrusive animation, better gallery viewer, a toolbar at the bottom on the window to link to FaceBook and Twitter, plus, if English is not your first language, you can the page into your preferred language. You can leave comments, you can “Like” a page(s), you can get an RSS feed if you want to stay up to date with what is going on here at Timeless Connections.

Take a little time to explore the web site. I think it is much improved!

…very busy bee. Lotsa work coming in, trying to keep up with it all. I just got one job of 83 VHS and Hi-8 tapes. Preparing to start taking photographs as one segment of the business. Photography is the one part of the business that I think will really make a profit. I’ve got one trial job coming up for some engagement photos. Really looking forward to seeing what I can really do when it comes down to taking people’s photos.

Well, booming may not be quite the word but after sending out an announcement yesterday about my new business and web site, I am already starting to get inquiries about jobs and even requests for new services I might provide.

I’v made a few corrections changes and updates on the web site so it is pretty much complete until I add ecommerce and the ability to accept credit cards and PayPal. I hoping PayPal and credit cards will be set up sometime next week but the ecommerce part may take a little longer.

A couple of new services I am considering is document scanning/storage and photography. Photography is pretty much of a sure thing–I’ve got some new equipments (lights and backdrops) coming in. The document scanning and storage is still not final. The scanner and the file storage is not a problem but I have to get more info on the software. If the software can meet the criteria, I believe that I can provide the service for a quite reasonable cost.

So, anyway, things are progressing nicely and I am looking forward to a busy first year.

I did it. I sent out an email announcement today to just about everyone I know or have known, even to some people that don’t even know they know me. So, I just sitting here waiting for the business to come rolling in. Not really. I’m working on jobs I already have, answering some emails and making update and corrections to this web site. I am anxious, though, to see the response.

The web site is official with the new domain name and email all set up. Now I have to advertise and get listed on Google so people can find me. I can’t help people with my services and products if no one can find me and that obviously means I can’t make a living which means I’m still unemployed!

Word-of-mouth is what is working right now but pretty soon I will run out of people in my area to “mouth off” to. I have to expand, to be more than just a highly localized service. I’m trying to do some “lite” photography to get my foot on the door with more services. I have a possible job shooting some engagement photos for some friends. I don’t have a lot of equipment, a good camera, a pretty good flash, a reflector, and a lot of info to read through so I can try to pretend to know what I’m doing. If nothing else, it will give me some practice and may help me figure out what not to do the next time. We shall see what happens.

A new company, a new web site, a new world

I’m writing this before my new company even has a official name and web site. I got laid off about 15 months ago. The economy had been going “south” for a while and the company I was working for (building and construction industry) lost a lot of business. So, there I am 54 years old looking for a job in an economy where it seems like every one else was also looking for a job. It seems people don’t want to hire an old guy like me and pay me a lot of money (I would’ve worked for less than they realize) when they can get some young kid that will be willing to work for less and maybe, supposedly better in touch with the modern, more “hip” culture than some old guy.

So, after looking for jobs for so long and unemployment running out soon, I had to do something to support my family. Some friends found out that I could do video editing and needed my services. They also encouraged me to start doing this kind of work to make ends meet and, wow, every where I turn, it seems like someone wants me to do some job for them.

So, here I am, starting a company, building a web site, and entering a new world of self-employment. I never really wanted to work for myself. I wanted the security of working for some one else and getting a paycheck a couple of times a month. But where did that get me–laid off four times in 36 years–yeah, that’s security all right. I know that sounds cynical, but I’m not, really.

Its a bit of a scary time starting out on my own, but hey, it’s a job even if I am employing myself. Besides, I believe in God and I believe that he takes care of those that believe in Him–He has sure taken care of my family (especially over the last 15 months) in ways I could never have imagined. Anyway, my web site will be “live” soon. I’m already getting quite a bit of work. So, look out world, here I come!
